Trees & Shrubs

The foundation of most gardens, the permanent plantings that are trees and shrubs, provide a great backdrop to an otherwise changing landscape. They provide structure, stability and consistency through the seasons and many will long outlive those that planted them!

Trevena Cross Trees

Trees are something special in a garden. They really are the backdrop to every other planting, and around which every other planting decision is made. A planting doesn’t get more permanent than a tree planting and in most cases the tree will long outlive the person who plants it!

Trevena Cross stocks a wide range of ornamental trees including the most popular, Alder, Birch, Beech, Poplar and Oak to name a few, and in bare root season has them available to buy as whips, along with a number of hedging options – a very economical way to plant up a big orchard or large group of trees (or a hedge).

A wide range of handpicked fruit trees are also available on site, including an extensive range of popular apple trees, selected for their hardiness, disease resistance, and most importantly, their taste.

One of the main questions we get asked about our apple trees is do we have any Cornish varieties? We do, but only a couple. This is because the majority of Cornish types don’t meet or exceed our high expectations, particularly for taste. We find other varieties are far superior and therefore don’t offer something we don’t believe in, just for a bit of county loyalty! Trevena Cross Owner Graham has a huge area of his own garden beyond the nursery, dedicated to an orchard of fruit trees and over the years he has tried and tested a huge variety, which has a knock on effect on the trees available to Trevena Cross customers at the garden centre. Only the best make it for sale!

Trevena Cross Shrubs

* Three 2L shrubs available for just £20 * (or £7.50 each)
This is the most popular and affordable size of shrub we offer – with a very wide range available – and all grown on site.

A list too long to compile, there is a shrub for every position and situation in the garden landscape – for sun or for shade, to climb a fence or cover the ground. Some may lose their leaves over winter (deciduous) while others will remain evergreen, but regardless of habit, they all add value and bring something – some shape, some structure, some colour, some interest to the bigger picture.

To name just a few? Beberis, Weigela, Spiraea, Viburnum, Hydrangea, Roses, Rhododendron, Azalea, Camellia, Pieris, Lavender, Cistus, Ceanothus, Hebe, Choisya, Daphne, Sambucus, Polygala, Forsythia, Buddleja, Hypericum, Abelia, Heather, Fatsia, Astelia, Euonymus, Aucuba, Cornus, Ferns, Mahonia, Photinia … and the list goes on. All (and much more!) available here, in a great many different varieties, with potential to create an exciting, varied space with shrubs alone!

We also have prominent changing seasonal benches that showcase ‘Spring Flowering’, ‘Summer Flowering’, ‘Autumn Colour’ and ‘Winter Colour’ plants throughout the year at applicable times, to help guide choices. E.g. if you’re looking for some colour for the winter months, these plants will be ‘stand-outs’ at the centre, for you to choose from during the winter.

The key is to plant out a range of different shrubs that will offer different seasonal interest, so that when combined, will provide the most appealing year-round bed or border.
