  • Griselinia Redge at Trevena Cross
    Out of Stock
Currently unavailable online Griselinia Redge is an evergreen, compact grower with attractive glossy green leaves, offset by dark coloured leaf stalks and stems. It could be considered more shrubby growing than the standard variety, but also makes a fantastic hedge with its better branching and strong healthy roots, resistant to disease. Slower growing than the standard it grows around 30cm a year, and is therefore a great one for a lower hedge, smaller garden or even container cultivation. It is reported hardy down to around -7°C, and will withstand salt laden winds on the seafront in sheltered or enclosed estuaries like St. Mawes and Falmouth in Cornwall, but in exposed positions will need to be positioned several hundred feet from the sea. For extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend the tougher Olearia traversii Compacta over Griselinia littoralis Redge, although Griselinia is a super choice for most locations. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Redge hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

We trim all of our hedging plants several times a year to promote a bushy plant, that will be ready to form a decent hedge right away. Height isn't everything - while a 2 litre plant could easily be 1m tall without trimming, this 'leggy' specimen wouldn't be the kind of plant that you want for a hedge. A trimmed one with multiple shoots, will establish as a hedge much more quickly.

    Griselinia Green Jewel

    £10.95£35.00
Currently unavailable online. A more subtle variation in colour than Griselinia Variegata, Griselinia Green Jewel displays bright, glossy green leaves, splashed cream margins, and grey undertones across the leaf. The leaves tend to be slightly more pointed than the rounder leaf of Variegata too. Like the other Griselinia varieties, it tolerates a coastal position and salt laden winds very well, however it prefers more enclosed/sheltered estuaries. Very exposed locations would be better suited to the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia hedging types. Plants on average supplied at 60-90cm high, but this can vary. A quick grower, we don't find height of griselinia is really such an important factor when considering the quality of the plant. A decent pot size provides a good indication of plant robustness and bushiness, and in fact we will cut our nursery plants down to encourage bushier growth (rather than a 'leggy' plant). if we feel it necessary. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Green Jewel hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

    Fatsia japonica

    £14.50
Also known as the Castor Oil Plant or Japanese aralia, Fatsia are evergreen shrubs that originate in Japan. They have large, dramatic, shiny, leathery leaves with small white flowers in terminal compound umbels and small, black fruits. Perfect for difficult growing conditions, the Fatsia look spectacular indoors as well as outside where the leaves darken and weather to a thicker texture. It grows well in heavy soil, copes with little to no direct sunlight and is fine in a darker corner of any garden. It can also be grown in a large container with a loam-based compost and appreciates a regular supply of water. If you have a stone or brick wall in a garden, consider situating a Fatsia nearby as it's striking appearance will grab your attention or using as a backdrop to other exotic plants. Echium pininana

    £4.50£9.50
Echium pininana – this exotic, evergreen plant originates in the Canary Islands and has an unusual appearance with huge hairy, silver leaves. Also evocatively named the Giant’s Vipers Bugloss, it seeds freely after flowering from the very tall spikes of funnel-shaped blue flowers it produces in the summer. (Height 3-5 metres). To thrive it needs full sun and well-drained soil and although it can withstand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees centigrade, it should be protected from hard frost. It can cause skin irritation. Pictures are for guidance only. Plants available in a one litre pot are significantly smaller than those in a four litre pot. Originating from New Zealand the Dicksonia fibrosa is also known as the golden tree fern or perhaps more fabulously as the Wheki ponga. An evergreen fern which slowly grows over 20+ years to 2 metres tall with 2 metre long dark green fronds. It's a striking, hardy addition to a shady garden or courtyard space. Pictures are for guidance only. Our online shopping Terms & Conditions (postage and returns) can be viewed here: /online-shopping-terms-conditions/
  • Dicksonia antarctica tree fern
    Out of Stock
NO LONGER AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE ONLINE. Available in a range of sizes, from 1ft of trunk right up to 8ft of trunk, and priced per foot - £45 per foot for trunks up to 5ft tall and £50 per foot for trunks 6ft tall and above. Don’t forget the measurement also includes the ‘hidden’ trunk within the pot/beneath the ground so a 4ft trunk tree fern won’t be 4ft of ‘visible trunk’ – but nearer 3ft of visible trunk. Do take this into consideration when thinking about the size that would best suit you and your garden – and the fact that they are slow growing, so will take a great deal of time to reach a ‘desired height’ if you purchase one a way off that height. PLEASE NOTE: Up to 5ft trunks: Are sent on a pallet with fronds intact. These trunks, plus fronds, should arrive in good condition. 6ft trunks: Can be sent with fronds but we cannot guarantee that the fronds will arrive intact. We always do our best to protect them when packing on to the pallet, but transit can sometimes disturb/damage the fronds.  7 - 8ft trunks: Due to height restrictions, these trunks will normally be removed from the pot and fixed to the pallet. They will arrive without fronds due to difficulties keeping them intact during transit. They will usually fall into the category of an 'oversize item', which means carriage will be more expensive - usually the cost of two pallets, and therefore double the carriage charge of trunks up to 6ft in height. Please contact us for specific details.
