Banksia integrifolia – of all the Banksias this coast Banksi is one of the hardiest needing low maintenance. A species of evergreen tree originating from the east coast of Australia and popular in Australian parks and gardens. The evergreen tree (height 4-6 metres) produces spikes of pale yellow flowers in summer/winter. Hardy and versatile, it is tolerant of salt winds, a variety of soils and hard pruning. Integrifolia will grow in clay, sand, acid and even alkaline soils and has good resistance to wind and salt, making it suitable for seaside planting. It should be planted in very well-drained soil, with lots of grit. Its hardy nature means it will also stand quite hard frosts once established. Normally available in a large 4-litre pot. highly valued by beekeepers because it produces large amounts of pollen and nectar during autumn and winter, thus helping support hives at a time when little else is flowering. • Miracle Gro All Purpose Continuous Realease Plant Food
    Out of Stock
Miracle-Gro All Purpose Continuous Release Plant Food feeds plants for up to six months with just a single application. A clever temperature-controlled coating means its 10 essential nutrients are only released into the soil/compost, and will only be to the plant's benefit when the conditions are right. The fertiliser won't leach with heavy rainfall or be 'feeding' when the plant doesn't require it/out of growing season.  This 'slow release' fertiliser removes the need for regular feeding, and yet contains all of the essential nutrients necessary to produce a strong healthy plant.
  • Psudosasa-japonica 15L
Available in a 15 litre pot. This tough, hardy, evergreen Bamboo is one of the best varieties for hedging and screening, as it forms the thickest of olive green canes, 4-6m/13-20ft tall – so great for traffic noise reduction and also one of the best-selling plants for screening noisy neighbours! It is also one of the only bamboos suitable for coastal and windy areas because it holds onto its large jungly looking leaves. It is very fast growing, with new shoots emerging from the base each summer, and superseding the previous year’s growth by around 1-1.5m/3.3-4.9ft. It spreads to form a clump, and can be pruned by either slicing off wayward shoots annually with a spade, or growing it alongside a lawn to stop it spreading. Alternatively, use a bamboo barrier when planting - as bamboos are shallow rooting this is fairly easy.
A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Pseudosasa japonica hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

Cyathea australis - A large, evergreen fern with a rough, thick trunk. It grows up to 4 metres high pretty quickly with a spread of 6-8 metres and each frond can reach up to 4 metres long in good conditions! The Cyathea tolerates the sun as long as the soil is moist, but does need a good sheltered site to thrive. Some sources suggest it’s hardier than a Dicksonia Antarctica. It will be hardy to minus 8 degrees centigrade, but be aware that the fronds will get frosted in severe winters, so give the plant protection. Probably the best tree fern for a sunny site with its large evergreen fern and hairy trunk. Plant in a sheltered area or with light shade and add peat when planting or inside in a conservatory. • Olearia-traversii-Compacta-9cm
9cm Olearia traversii Compacta plants A very economical way to get a compact coastal hedge on the go. They may be small now but these 9cm Olearia traversii Compacta plants will soon be romping away, bushing out, and forming a decent hedge that’s made to last. The ideal option if you don’t need that ‘instant hedge’ right away. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: We don’t believe the height of our hedging plants to be of huge importance when we make them available for sale. In fact we trim all of our hedging plants several times a year to promote a bushy plant, that will be ready to form a decent hedge right away. Height isn’t everything – while a 2 litre plant could easily be 1m tall without trimming, this ‘leggy’ specimen wouldn’t be the kind of plant that you want for a hedge. A trimmed one with multiple shoots, will establish as a hedge much more quickly, and we therefore believe shape and bushiness to be real signs of quality, rather than current plant height. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of 9cm Olearia traversii Compacta hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

    Echium pininana

    £4.50£9.50
Echium pininana – this exotic, evergreen plant originates in the Canary Islands and has an unusual appearance with huge hairy, silver leaves. Also evocatively named the Giant’s Vipers Bugloss, it seeds freely after flowering from the very tall spikes of funnel-shaped blue flowers it produces in the summer. (Height 3-5 metres). To thrive it needs full sun and well-drained soil and although it can withstand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees centigrade, it should be protected from hard frost. It can cause skin irritation. Pictures are for guidance only. Plants available in a one litre pot are significantly smaller than those in a four litre pot. • Griselinia VariegataGriselinia Variegata plants
A slower growing Griselinia, this attractive variety grows about 30cm / 1ft a year, if fed with a very good slow release fertiliser like Trevena Cross Fertiliser, making it very suitable for smaller sized hedges. It's attractive variegation is displayed on leaves that tend to be rounder in shape than on it's close relative Griselinia Green Jewel. Like the standard Griselinia, it will withstand salt laden winds but will only tolerate a seafront position if located in a sheltered estuary or inlet, like St Mawes or Falmouth in Cornwall. In exposed locations, Griselinia would need to be positioned several hundred feet away from the sea or for extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend an alternative like the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia traversii. Plants on average supplied at 60-90cm high, but this can vary. A quick grower, we don’t find height of Griselinia is really such an important factor when considering the quality of the plant. A decent pot size provides a good indication of plant robustness and bushiness, and in fact we will cut our nursery plants down to encourage bushier growth (rather than a ‘leggy’ plant). if we feel it necessary. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Variegata hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).
