Griselinia littoralis is a fast growing evergreen hedging plant with apple green leaves, hardy to at least -10°C. It will withstand salt laden winds on the seafront in sheltered or enclosed estuaries like St. Mawes and Falmouth in Cornwall, but in exposed positions will need to be positioned several hundred feet from the sea.
For extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend the tougher Olearia traversii or Olearia virgata Laxifolia over Griselinia littoralis, although Griselinia is a super choice for most locations.

  • elaeagnus x ebbingei compacta
Available in a 2 litre pot. Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta forms a neater, more compact hedge than its very close relative Elaeagnus ebbingei, and is ideal for hedges up to 2m/6ft. It grows around 45 cm/18inches a year, looks great on Cornish walls and is good for smaller gardens. Besides forming a more compact hedge, many of its other characteristics, including its nitrogen fixing capabilities, are in line with its relative Elaeagnus x ebbingei. It is an evergreen, hardy, salt-wind tolerant hedging plant that will grow very close to the sea. It will grow well in any well drained soil, even poor, dry soils, as it is particularly drought tolerant, and can be positioned in anything from full sun to heavy shade. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Elaeagnus x ebbingei Compacta hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

Similar to the standard Griselinia, but with darker green, glossy leaves, Griselinia Green Horizon is a fast growing evergreen hedging plant, hardy to at least -10°C to -12°C. It will withstand a coastal position and salt laden winds well but as with the standard and other variations of Griselinia, prefers a more sheltered estuary or inlet like St Mawes or Falmouth in Cornwall. In more exposed locations, Griselinia Green Horizon will need to be positioned several hundred feet from the sea, and for extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend the tougher Olearia hedging types.
A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Green Horizon hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

  • Sea of Griselinia Green JewelGriselinia Green Jewel hedging plant 5ltr

    Griselinia Green Jewel

    £10.95£25.00
Available in a 5 litre or 10 litre pot.
A more subtle variation in colour than Griselinia Variegata, Griselinia Green Jewel displays bright, glossy green leaves, splashed cream margins, and grey undertones across the leaf. The leaves tend to be slightly more pointed than the rounder leaf of Variegata too.
Like the other Griselinia varieties, it tolerates a coastal position and salt laden winds very well, however it prefers more enclosed/sheltered estuaries. Very exposed locations would be better suited to the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia hedging types.
A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Green Jewel hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

A slower grower but a reliable one that will give you great results. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Euonymus japonicus hedging plants. • Euonymus Microphyllus foliage close upEuonymus Microphyllus plants

    Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus

    £8.50£24.95
Available in a 3 litre or a 10 litre pot. Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus is an evergreen, densely bushy, rounded shrub with dark green leaves. A great alternative to Buxus (prone to box blight and other pests and diseases), it can provide a great low screen or box hedge when plants are positioned next to each other. Low maintenance, with a compact growth habit, this variety will reach only a maximum of 1m/3.3ft tall and wide eventually, spreading right to ground level. It is well suited to trimming to a desirable shape, making maintenance very easy indeed. Variegated gold leaf highlights and small greenish-white flowers in early summer offer added interest. Hardier than some Euonymus varieties it is an excellent option for hedging, or in and around borders. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants). Or check out our 75 plant UK wide Pallet Deal on 3 litre Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus.

    £9.95£25.00
Available in a 5 or 10 litre pot. Olearia virgata Laxifolia has become a firm favourite with us here at Trevena Cross Nurseries and is planted on our own land as screening. Perhaps not as well known or as well understood as some other hedging types, we are keen to promote its merits as a fantastic grower! We have come across nothing so tough, or so quick to form a decent screen or hedge. Olearia traversii Compacta is another great coastal hedge we recommend. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Olearia Laxifolia hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants). For 50 5 litre plants see our Olearia Laxifolia Pallet Deal, to benefit from UK wide FREE DELIVERY.

Available in a 5 litre pot. A variety of Cherry Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus Genolia is a Swiss evergreen shrub, ideal for mass planting as hedging or screening due to its dense, erect, columnar growing habit. Slower growing than common laurel, it displays shiny, dark green, fairly elongated foliage and in spring bears erect racemes/clusters of white flowers, which are attractive to bees and other wildlife. In autumn, some glossy black (inedible) fruits and (poisonous if eaten) seed capsules follow. It’s compact growth forms a narrow hedge, perfect for the smaller garden or where space is an issue. Trimming and pruning requirements are also reduced as a result. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Prunus laurocerasus Genolia hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).
  • pseudosasa-japonica

    Pseudosasa japonica

    £29.95£45.00
Available in large 10 litre and 20 litre pots. This tough, hardy, evergreen Bamboo is one of the best varieties for hedging and screening, as it forms the thickest of olive green canes, 4-6m/13-20ft tall – so great for traffic noise reduction and also one of the best-selling plants for screening noisy neighbours! It is also one of the only bamboos suitable for coastal and windy areas because it holds onto its large jungly looking leaves. It is very fast growing, with new shoots emerging from the base each summer, and superseding the previous year’s growth by around 1-1.5m/3.3-4.9ft. It spreads to form a clump, and can be pruned by either slicing off wayward shoots annually with a spade, or growing it alongside a lawn to stop it spreading. Alternatively, use a bamboo barrier when planting - as bamboos are shallow rooting this is fairly easy.
A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Pseudosasa japonica hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).
  • Dicksonia antarctica tree fern
Available in a range of sizes, from 1ft of trunk right up to 8ft of trunk, and priced per foot - £45 per foot for trunks up to 5ft tall and £50 per foot for trunks 6ft tall and above. Don’t forget the measurement also includes the ‘hidden’ trunk within the pot/beneath the ground so a 4ft trunk tree fern won’t be 4ft of ‘visible trunk’ – but nearer 3ft of visible trunk. Do take this into consideration when thinking about the size that would best suit you and your garden – and the fact that they are slow growing, so will take a great deal of time to reach a ‘desired height’ if you purchase one a way off that height. PLEASE NOTE: Up to 5ft trunks: Are sent on a pallet with fronds intact. These trunks, plus fronds, should arrive in good condition. 6ft trunks: Can be sent with fronds but we cannot guarantee that the fronds will arrive intact. We always do our best to protect them when packing on to the pallet, but transit can sometimes disturb/damage the fronds.  7 - 8ft trunks: Due to height restrictions, these trunks will normally be removed from the pot and fixed to the pallet. Due to their size, we cannot guarantee that the fronds will arrive intact. They will usually fall into the category of an 'oversize item', which means carriage will be more expensive - usually the cost of two pallets, and therefore double the carriage charge of trunks up to 6ft in height. Please contact us for specific details.
