Rhodocoma gigantea – possibly the most handsome of the large varieties of restio due to its finely divided foliage when young, maturing to long arching plumes of tall feathery foliage reaching 2-3 metres. Known to confuse the onlooker appearing to be a mix of bamboo or grass. It should be planted in well-drained, acidic soil and kept moist in the summer and given bark mulch (or similar) in cold winters to ensure it survives temperatures of up to -7 degrees centigrade. The top growth can be burnt back by hard frosts but will regrow again in the spring.
