Protea cynaroides – The national flower of South Africa with huge pink-crimson to cream bowl-shaped flowers and leathery leaves in the summer. Also known as the King Protea and Cape Artichoke Flower. One of the easiest Proteas to grow, this evergreen shrub will reach 1.5-2 metres high. Either plant in full sun in a large tub with protection for winter and water sparingly or outdoors in a frost-free, sheltered border in poor neutral to acid, well-drained soil. It can tolerate about minus 5 degrees centigrade, but if frosted it should re grow from the base. Do not use a fertiliser containing phosphates.
