Echium pininana – this exotic, evergreen plant originates in the Canary Islands and has an unusual appearance with huge hairy, silver leaves. Also evocatively named the Giant’s Vipers Bugloss, it seeds freely after flowering from the very tall spikes of funnel-shaped blue flowers it produces in the summer. (Height 3-5 metres). To thrive it needs full sun and well-drained soil and although it can withstand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees centigrade, it should be protected from hard frost. It can cause skin irritation.
