We’ve chosen a special selection of our favourite plants to grow in larger numbers for our garden centre visitors and are now making these available for you to buy online. Our ‘top plant picks’ include unusual, rare and appealing specimens which we will deliver to you.

Many of these plants are so rare they are difficult to find at other garden centres across the country. Others have special historical significance to us. We’re proud to have been one of the very first places in the UK to grow and sell ‘exotica’ such as the Restios and continue to grow and sell these plants today.

All these plants are available to buy online, subject to availability as they sell out fast! Watch out for new additions being added to our Trevena favourites in our ‘top plant picks’ selection.

As a traditional nursery growing a huge range of plants we aren’t able to maintain a complete catalogue of plants in our online shop due to continuously changing stock levels. If you’d like to buy plants which aren’t on the website, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us as we are happy to arrange payment and delivery (subject to availability). Height isn’t everything – while a 2 litre plant could easily be 1m tall without trimming, this ‘leggy’ specimen wouldn’t be the kind of plant that you want for a hedge. A trimmed one with multiple shoots, will establish as a hedge much more quickly.

    Echium pininana

    £4.50£9.50
Echium pininana – this exotic, evergreen plant originates in the Canary Islands and has an unusual appearance with huge hairy, silver leaves. Also evocatively named the Giant’s Vipers Bugloss, it seeds freely after flowering from the very tall spikes of funnel-shaped blue flowers it produces in the summer. (Height 3-5 metres). To thrive it needs full sun and well-drained soil and although it can withstand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees centigrade, it should be protected from hard frost. It can cause skin irritation. Pictures are for guidance only. Plants available in a one litre pot are significantly smaller than those in a four litre pot. It should be grown in a sheltered spot in full sun or part shade, in a moist but well drained soil.

Its dense and bushy habit (1.5m height and spread) makes it perfect in a border with other shrubs or a mixed border with perennials. In fact we trim all of our hedging plants several times a year to promote a bushy plant, that will be ready to form a decent hedge right away. Height isn’t everything – while a 2 litre plant could easily be 1m tall without trimming, this ‘leggy’ specimen wouldn’t be the kind of plant that you want for a hedge. • Lonicera-Scoop-foliageLonicera-Scoop
    Out of Stock
Available in a 2 litre pot, currently around 30-40cm high. Ideal height: 40-100cm/1.5-3ft Growth rate: 20-40cm/8inches-1ft a year Position & planting: plant 30cm/1ft apart; fertile, well drained soil in full sun-part shade Perfect for… neat, small box type hedge or for topiary This 'box honeysuckle' is possibly the best box substitute, compact growing with evergreen tiny dark green, glossy leaves, perfect for a uniform, low hedge (up to 1m tall), or for topiary. Once established it will display tiny white, mildly scented flowers in spring followed by small purple-black fruit later in the year. It should be grown in sun to partial shade in a well drained soil and is hardy to -12 degrees C. It doesn't like very wet soil. Great for topiary because it grows in a naturally neat, rounded shape that is easy to prune. Pruning encourages it to grow more densely, and it is actually quite a quick grower in a lighter soil, perfect if you're after a quick low border or hedge. It can also sit nicely in a large pot if you want a focal point as a specimen plant pruned to your desired shape. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Lonicera Scoop hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

  • Sea of Griselinia Green Jewel5L-Griselinia-Green-Jewel

    Griselinia Green Jewel

    £10.95£35.00
5L pots available online. A more subtle variation in colour than Griselinia Variegata, Griselinia Green Jewel displays bright, glossy green leaves, splashed cream margins, and grey undertones across the leaf. The leaves tend to be slightly more pointed than the rounder leaf of Variegata too. Like the other Griselinia varieties, it tolerates a coastal position and salt laden winds very well, however it prefers more enclosed/sheltered estuaries. Very exposed locations would be better suited to the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia hedging types. Plants on average supplied at 60-90cm high, but this can vary. A quick grower, we don't find height of griselinia is really such an important factor when considering the quality of the plant. A decent pot size provides a good indication of plant robustness and bushiness, and in fact we will cut our nursery plants down to encourage bushier growth (rather than a 'leggy' plant). if we feel it necessary. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Green Jewel hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).
  • Griselinia VariegataGriselinia Variegata plants
A slower growing Griselinia, this attractive variety grows about 30cm / 1ft a year, if fed with a very good slow release fertiliser like Trevena Cross Fertiliser, making it very suitable for smaller sized hedges. It's attractive variegation is displayed on leaves that tend to be rounder in shape than on it's close relative Griselinia Green Jewel. Like the standard Griselinia, it will withstand salt laden winds but will only tolerate a seafront position if located in a sheltered estuary or inlet, like St Mawes or Falmouth in Cornwall. In exposed locations, Griselinia would need to be positioned several hundred feet away from the sea or for extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend an alternative like the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia traversii. Plants on average supplied at 60-90cm high, but this can vary. A quick grower, we don’t find height of Griselinia is really such an important factor when considering the quality of the plant. A decent pot size provides a good indication of plant robustness and bushiness, and in fact we will cut our nursery plants down to encourage bushier growth (rather than a ‘leggy’ plant). if we feel it necessary. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Variegata hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

It grows best when the roots are cool, so plenty of mulch will aid this plant along with rich, fertile soil that’s moist and well-drained. Plant in full sun or partial shade. It’s hardy to -8 degrees centigrade. Pictures are for guidance only. Our online shopping Terms & Conditions (postage and returns) can be viewed here: /online-shopping-terms-conditions/

Cyathea australis - A large, evergreen fern with a rough, thick trunk. It grows up to 4 metres high pretty quickly with a spread of 6-8 metres and each frond can reach up to 4 metres long in good conditions! The Cyathea tolerates the sun as long as the soil is moist, but does need a good sheltered site to thrive. Some sources suggest it’s hardier than a Dicksonia Antarctica. It will be hardy to minus 8 degrees centigrade, but be aware that the fronds will get frosted in severe winters, so give the plant protection. Probably the best tree fern for a sunny site with its large evergreen fern and hairy trunk. Plant in a sheltered area or with light shade and add peat when planting or inside in a conservatory. Varieties will be chosen at random and will vary depending on availability but we'll aim to provide you with a mixed selection. Echeverias are succulent, evergreens from South America, with attractive rosette forming foliage. Ideal in a warm position, they grow well in troughs, pots and containers inside or outside on a sunny patio - just be sure to protect from the cold/frosts when combined with 'wet weather' as these plants thrive in drought-like conditions once established, originating from hot, sunny climes!
