    Echium pininana

    £4.50£9.50
Echium pininana – this exotic, evergreen plant originates in the Canary Islands and has an unusual appearance with huge hairy, silver leaves. Also evocatively named the Giant’s Vipers Bugloss, it seeds freely after flowering from the very tall spikes of funnel-shaped blue flowers it produces in the summer. (Height 3-5 metres). To thrive it needs full sun and well-drained soil and although it can withstand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees centigrade, it should be protected from hard frost. It can cause skin irritation. Pictures are for guidance only. Plants available in a one litre pot are significantly smaller than those in a four litre pot. • Dicksonia antarctica tree fern trunksDicksonia antarctica tree fern
Bare root Dicksonia antarctica tree fern trunks - sent as bare trunks, not in a pot. Available in a range of sizes, from 1ft of trunk up to 6ft of trunk.  (For 1ft and 2ft trunks, please click here). Please contact us re. delivery costs if planning to purchase small trunks and large trunks as part of the same order. We will always try to give you the best price for delivery. Don’t forget the measurement also includes the trunk that will be ‘hidden’ within the pot/beneath the ground when planted out, so a 4ft trunk tree fern won’t be 4ft of ‘visible trunk’ – but nearer 3ft of visible trunk. Do take this into consideration when thinking about the size that would best suit you and your garden – and the fact that they are slow growing, so will take a great deal of time to reach a ‘desired height’ if you purchase one a way off that height. PLEASE NOTE: Up to 5ft trunks: Are sent on a pallet with fronds intact. These trunks, plus fronds, should arrive in good condition. 5-6ft trunks: Fronds may be removed before sending, to avoid damage being caused in transit. We can send with fronds on request, but we cannot guarantee that the fronds will arrive intact, despite doing our best to protect them when packing on to the pallet.

Cyathea australis - A large, evergreen fern with a rough, thick trunk. It grows up to 4 metres high pretty quickly with a spread of 6-8 metres and each frond can reach up to 4 metres long in good conditions! The Cyathea tolerates the sun as long as the soil is moist, but does need a good sheltered site to thrive. Some sources suggest it’s hardier than a Dicksonia Antarctica. It will be hardy to minus 8 degrees centigrade, but be aware that the fronds will get frosted in severe winters, so give the plant protection. Probably the best tree fern for a sunny site with its large evergreen fern and hairy trunk. Plant in a sheltered area or with light shade and add peat when planting or inside in a conservatory.
