    Protea cynaroides - The national flower of South Africa with huge pink-crimson to cream bowl-shaped flowers and leathery leaves in the summer. Also known as the King Protea and Cape Artichoke Flower. One of the easiest Proteas to grow, this evergreen shrub will reach 1.5-2 metres high. Either plant in full sun in a large tub with protection for winter and water sparingly or outdoors in a frost-free, sheltered border in poor neutral to acid, well-drained soil. It can tolerate about minus 5 degrees centigrade, but if frosted it should re grow from the base. Do not use a fertiliser containing phosphates.     Banksia integrifolia – of all the Banksias this coast Banksi is one of the hardiest needing low maintenance. A species of evergreen tree originating from the east coast of Australia and popular in Australian parks and gardens. The evergreen tree (height 4-6 metres) produces spikes of pale yellow flowers in summer/winter. Hardy and versatile, it is tolerant of salt winds, a variety of soils and hard pruning. Integrifolia will grow in clay, sand, acid and even alkaline soils and has good resistance to wind and salt, making it suitable for seaside planting. It should be planted in very well-drained soil, with lots of grit. Its hardy nature means it will also stand quite hard frosts once established. Normally available in a large 4-litre pot. highly valued by beekeepers because it produces large amounts of pollen and nectar during autumn and winter, thus helping support hives at a time when little else is flowering.     Daphne Pink Fragrance – if you were smelling the flowers in heaven, you might just be near this Daphne as the scent is divine! The pink flower buds are carried on new wood in the spring and open up to reveal white flushed pink flowers. Low growing, it reaches to only 90 cms and its compact habit and profuse flowering through spring and summer makes it a fantastic ‘smelly’ addition to the garden. The colours are ever changing through winter, fading to pale yellow in spring and the plant’s height and spread is 1+ metres. One of our most popular sizes is the two litre perennial - a nicely established plant but also a very cost effective buy, and still with plenty of growing on to do.     Also known as the Castor Oil Plant or Japanese aralia, Fatsia are evergreen shrubs that originate in Japan. They have large, dramatic, shiny, leathery leaves with small white flowers in terminal compound umbels and small, black fruits. Perfect for difficult growing conditions, the Fatsia look spectacular indoors as well as outside where the leaves darken and weather to a thicker texture. It grows well in heavy soil, copes with little to no direct sunlight and is fine in a darker corner of any garden. It can also be grown in a large container with a loam-based compost and appreciates a regular supply of water. If you have a stone or brick wall in a garden, consider situating a Fatsia nearby as it's striking appearance will grab your attention or using as a backdrop to other exotic plants.
