Many of these plants are so rare they are difficult to find at other garden centres across the country. Others have special historical significance to us. We’re proud to have been one of the very first places in the UK to grow and sell ‘exotica’ such as the Restios and continue to grow and sell these plants today.

All these plants are available to buy online, subject to availability as they sell out fast! Watch out for new additions being added to our Trevena favourites in our ‘top plant picks’ selection.

As a traditional nursery growing a huge range of plants we aren’t able to maintain a complete catalogue of plants in our online shop due to continuously changing stock levels. If you’d like to buy plants which aren’t on the website, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us as we are happy to arrange payment and delivery (subject to availability). Echium pininana

    £4.50£9.50
Echium pininana – this exotic, evergreen plant originates in the Canary Islands and has an unusual appearance with huge hairy, silver leaves. Also evocatively named the Giant’s Vipers Bugloss, it seeds freely after flowering from the very tall spikes of funnel-shaped blue flowers it produces in the summer. (Height 3-5 metres). To thrive it needs full sun and well-drained soil and although it can withstand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees centigrade, it should be protected from hard frost. It can cause skin irritation. Pictures are for guidance only. Plants available in a one litre pot are significantly smaller than those in a four litre pot. Our online shopping Terms & Conditions (postage and returns) can be viewed here: /online-shopping-terms-conditions/
  • Prostanthera rotundifolia Rosea
Also known as the Australian Mint Bush, this bushy, evergreen shrub has strongly mint-scented dark green leaves and an abundance of pretty pale rose pink flowers (darker at the centre) through a long flowering season in late spring-early summer. It can grow up to 2.5m in the right conditions, with a spread of around 1.5m after a number of years. It should be grown in a sunny sheltered position in a moist but well drained soil.
  • Pittosporum Tom Thumb
Pittosporum tenuifolium Tom Thumb is a compact, rounded shrub with attractive small, dark purple leaves, which contrasts strikingly with its light green young growth. Grown for its foliage, its slow growing nature suits a smaller space (ultimate height and spread only up to 1m). It should be grown in a sheltered spot in full sun or part shade, in a moist but well drained soil.
  • Hypericum Hidcote yellow flowerHypericum Hidcote at Trevena Cross
Also known as St John's Wort, Hypericum Hidcote is a reliable grower, bearing masses of golden yellow flowers (around 5cm in diameter) through summer and into autumn. Its dense and bushy habit (1.5m height and spread) makes it perfect in a border with other shrubs or a mixed border with perennials. It grows well in moist but well drained soil, in full sun or partial shade, ideally somewhere sheltered, protected from cold, drying winds. It is also attractive to bees - an added bonus!
  • Corokia x virgata Sunsplash foliageCorokia x virgata Sunsplash - Trevena Cross
Corokia x virgata Sunsplash (1.2-1.5m height and spread) is part of our coastal plant collection and it is a great one for seaside planting - tolerating salt laden winds well. It is evergreen for year round interest, with green-yellow and cream variegated foliage, sometimes flushed orange, and small star shaped yellow flowers in spring, followed by shiny orange-red berries in autumn. It works well as a low hedge, due to its compact, upright growing habit too. Enjoys a well drained, fertile soil in a sunny, ideally sheltered position.
  • Olearia traversii Compacta

    Olearia traversii Compacta

    £6.95£9.95
Currently only available in a 2 litre pot. Olearia traversii Compacta is a useful, compact form of this popular hedging plant. Retaining all of the benefits of the original Olearia traversii  - a tough, quick growing, upright evergreen shrub, and ideal as a hedging plant when used in multiples. It displays glossy green leaves, which are silvery-white on the undersides, creating a lovely two-tone effect. Inconspicuous daisy-like flowers bloom on panicles in early summer. It particularly makes a great coastal hedge, due to its tolerance of salt winds and dry, sandy soils. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Olearia traversii Compacta hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).

Griselinia littoralis is a fast growing evergreen hedging plant with apple green leaves, hardy to at least -10°C. It will withstand salt laden winds on the seafront in sheltered or enclosed estuaries like St. Mawes and Falmouth in Cornwall, but in exposed positions will need to be positioned several hundred feet from the sea.
For extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend the tougher Olearia traversii or Olearia virgata Laxifolia over Griselinia littoralis, although Griselinia is a super choice for most locations.

    £8.50£24.95
Available in a 3 litre or a 10 litre pot. Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus is an evergreen, densely bushy, rounded shrub with dark green leaves. A great alternative to Buxus (prone to box blight and other pests and diseases), it can provide a great low screen or box hedge when plants are positioned next to each other. Low maintenance, with a compact growth habit, this variety will reach only a maximum of 1m/3.3ft tall and wide eventually, spreading right to ground level. It is well suited to trimming to a desirable shape, making maintenance very easy indeed. Variegated gold leaf highlights and small greenish-white flowers in early summer offer added interest. Hardier than some Euonymus varieties it is an excellent option for hedging, or in and around borders. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants). • Prunus Genolia foliagePrunus Genolia plant picture

A variety of Cherry Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus Genolia is a Swiss evergreen shrub, ideal for mass planting as hedging or screening due to its dense, erect, columnar growing habit. Slower growing than common laurel, it displays shiny, dark green, fairly elongated foliage and in spring bears erect racemes/clusters of white flowers, which are attractive to bees and other wildlife. In autumn, some glossy black (inedible) fruits and (poisonous if eaten) seed capsules follow. It’s compact growth forms a narrow hedge, perfect for the smaller garden or where space is an issue. Trimming and pruning requirements are also reduced as a result. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Prunus laurocerasus Genolia hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).
  • Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus
The nursery grows thousands of different perennials every year - and they are available at the garden centre in various sizes. One of our most popular sizes is the two litre perennial - a nicely established plant but also a very cost effective buy, and still with plenty of growing on to do. Perfect for a mixed perennial or shrub and perennial border - or perhaps as focal points in pots of summer colour! An example of the selection available includes different varieties of Aquilegia, Campanula, Coreopsis, Gaillardia, Lupinus, Rudbeckia and Salvia. Your three selected 2ltr plants could form any combination and will be chosen based on current availability, but we will aim to supply a mixed selection (unless requested otherwise).

    Aloe striatula

    £10.50
Originating from South Africa, the Aloe striatula is a hardy, resilient succulent (1 metre in height and spread) which is tolerant of drought and frost. In early summer this plant produces colourful, orange-yellow flowers which are set off against the stripey light and dark green stems creating a compelling and curious (almost alien like) appeal. Plant in full sun in a very well drained soil with extra grit added when planting. Situate in wall-side borders, rock gardens, gravel gardens or patio containers for best effect. Pictures are for guidance only. Our online shopping Terms & Conditions (postage and returns) can be viewed here: /online-shopping-terms-conditions/
  • Griselinia Variegata leaves close upGriselinia Variegata plants
Available in a 5 litre pot. A slower growing Griselinia, this attractive variety grows about 30cm / 1ft a year, if fed with a very good slow release fertiliser like Trevena Cross Fertiliser, making it very suitable for smaller sized hedges. It's attractive variegation is displayed on leaves that tend to be rounder in shape than on it's close relative Griselinia Green Jewel. Like the standard Griselinia, it will withstand salt laden winds but will only tolerate a seafront position if located in a sheltered estuary or inlet, like St Mawes or Falmouth in Cornwall. In exposed locations, Griselinia would need to be positioned several hundred feet away from the sea or for extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend an alternative like the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia traversii. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Variegata hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).
  • Sea of Griselinia Green JewelGriselinia Green Jewel hedging plant 5ltr

    Griselinia Green Jewel

    £10.95£25.00
Available in a 5 litre or 10 litre pot.
A more subtle variation in colour than Griselinia Variegata, Griselinia Green Jewel displays bright, glossy green leaves, splashed cream margins, and grey undertones across the leaf. The leaves tend to be slightly more pointed than the rounder leaf of Variegata too.
Like the other Griselinia varieties, it tolerates a coastal position and salt laden winds very well, however it prefers more enclosed/sheltered estuaries. Very exposed locations would be better suited to the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia hedging types.
A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Green Jewel hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants).
