Hedging is a perfect way to bring structure and background colour to a garden, whilst creating a barrier, and in most cases privacy from neighbours. We grow many thousands of hedging plants here on our outside beds each year, and so can supply a hedge for the smallest of gardens or provide coverage across acres of land. Our hedging plants are hardy, and able to withstand salt-laden winds, a common requirement for gardens down here in Cornwall, near the coast. From attractive apple green Griselinia littoralis to tough Olearia traversii Compacta, there is a big range and plenty of choice!
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: We don’t believe the height of our hedging plants to be of huge importance when we make them available for sale. In fact we trim all of our hedging plants several times a year to promote a bushy plant, that will be ready to form a decent hedge right away. Height isn’t everything – while a 2 litre plant could easily be 1m tall without trimming, this ‘leggy’ specimen wouldn’t be the kind of plant that you want for a hedge. A trimmed one with multiple shoots, will establish as a hedge much more quickly, and we therefore believe shape and bushiness to be real signs of quality, rather than current plant height.
Where we do supply a height guide for our hedging plants, this is an approximation. All heights are measured from the top of the pot to the tip of the plant i.e. height excludes pot.
The hedging plants we grow are based on our own experience of what makes a truly great hedge (good growth habit, disease resistance, aesthetically pleasing etc) and very importantly, what can withstand the harshest of weather conditions, particularly the winds, most often posing the greatest challenge to gardens both inland and especially on our Cornish coastline – and the coastline around the UK.
