Hedging is a perfect way to bring structure and background colour to a garden, whilst creating a barrier, and in most cases privacy from neighbours. We grow many thousands of hedging plants here on our outside beds each year, and so can supply a hedge for the smallest of gardens or provide coverage across acres of land. Our hedging plants are hardy, and able to withstand salt-laden winds, a common requirement for gardens down here in Cornwall, near the coast. From attractive apple green Griselinia littoralis to tough Olearia traversii Compacta, there is a big range and plenty of choice!
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: We don’t believe the height of our hedging plants to be of huge importance when we make them available for sale. In fact we trim all of our hedging plants several times a year to promote a bushy plant, that will be ready to form a decent hedge right away. Height isn’t everything – while a 2 litre plant could easily be 1m tall without trimming, this ‘leggy’ specimen wouldn’t be the kind of plant that you want for a hedge. A trimmed one with multiple shoots, will establish as a hedge much more quickly, and we therefore believe shape and bushiness to be real signs of quality, rather than current plant height.
Where we do supply a height guide for our hedging plants, this is an approximation. All heights are measured from the top of the pot to the tip of the plant i.e. height excludes pot.
The hedging plants we grow are based on our own experience of what makes a truly great hedge (good growth habit, disease resistance, aesthetically pleasing etc) and very importantly, what can withstand the harshest of weather conditions, particularly the winds, most often posing the greatest challenge to gardens both inland and especially on our Cornish coastline – and the coastline around the UK.

Griselinia Green Jewel
£10.95 – £35.005L pots available online. A more subtle variation in colour than Griselinia Variegata, Griselinia Green Jewel displays bright, glossy green leaves, splashed cream margins, and grey undertones across the leaf. The leaves tend to be slightly more pointed than the rounder leaf of Variegata too. Like the other Griselinia varieties, it tolerates a coastal position and salt laden winds very well, however it prefers more enclosed/sheltered estuaries. Very exposed locations would be better suited to the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia hedging types. Plants on average supplied at 60-90cm high, but this can vary. A quick grower, we don't find height of griselinia is really such an important factor when considering the quality of the plant. A decent pot size provides a good indication of plant robustness and bushiness, and in fact we will cut our nursery plants down to encourage bushier growth (rather than a 'leggy' plant). if we feel it necessary. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Green Jewel hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants). -

Griselinia Variegata
£10.95A slower growing Griselinia, this attractive variety grows about 30cm / 1ft a year, if fed with a very good slow release fertiliser like Trevena Cross Fertiliser, making it very suitable for smaller sized hedges. It's attractive variegation is displayed on leaves that tend to be rounder in shape than on it's close relative Griselinia Green Jewel. Like the standard Griselinia, it will withstand salt laden winds but will only tolerate a seafront position if located in a sheltered estuary or inlet, like St Mawes or Falmouth in Cornwall. In exposed locations, Griselinia would need to be positioned several hundred feet away from the sea or for extremely exposed coastal sites like Land’s End, and Lizard Point in Cornwall, we would recommend an alternative like the tougher Elaeagnus or Olearia traversii. Plants on average supplied at 60-90cm high, but this can vary. A quick grower, we don’t find height of Griselinia is really such an important factor when considering the quality of the plant. A decent pot size provides a good indication of plant robustness and bushiness, and in fact we will cut our nursery plants down to encourage bushier growth (rather than a ‘leggy’ plant). if we feel it necessary. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Griselinia Variegata hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants). -
Ilex crenata
£7.95 – £25.00Ilex crenata is the perfect alternative to Buxus (Box hedging) - looking almost identical to the old favourite, but without falling victim to disease problems such as box blight. Its common name is Japanese Holly, but it doesn't have prickly leaves, it has small dark green (probably slightly darker than Buxus) leaves that help form a neat dense hedge. Another advantage over Buxus is its more robust nature - and ability to grow beyond the common low Box hedge if desired - up to around 1.5m, due to its slightly more vigorous growth habit. A great evergreen option - and also perfect for topiary. Plant in a well drained soil in a sun/part shade position. A per plant discount is available for bulk purchases of Ilex crenata hedging plants. This discount will be applied in your basket if applicable (begins at 10+ plants). -
