An extraordinary shrub from New Zealand. Grows for many years on a single stem to 3-4m (12ft) before branching with an eventual height in the region of 4-5m (15ft) Long thin leathery leaves hang at odd angles from the stem. Best grown as a focal plant or against a wall to give a silhouette effect. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile well drained soil. An excellent plant for an architectural effect in the exotic garden.

Pittosporum tenuifolium Wendle Channon

An evergreen upright branched shrub or small tree from New Zealand. Leathery, glossy dark green leaves are lance shaped and slightly toothed with a white underside. White daisy like flowers with yellow centres cover the plant in late spring. Height up to 4m with a spread of 3m but can be trimmed to a more reasonable size if required. Grow in full sun in a well drained soil. An excellent choice for seaside gardens.

Leucadendron Safari Sunshine

This is a very interesting cultivar of the popular Leucadendron safari sunset. Evergreen dense rounded shrub with claret red striped flowers. The foliage is variegated and adds great colour to the garden. Now being introduced to the cut flower trade. Height and spread to 1.5m. Plant in full sun in free-draining soil. Reputed to be fairly frost hardy so we would advise protecting in very cold weather.

An attractive fast growing evergreen from Australia that forms a densely foliaged shrub 2-3m high by 1-3m wide. In late spring and summer 8cm long orange red bottlebrush type flowers are produced. Hedychium densiflorum Assam Orange

A smallish Ginger Lily and one of the more popular ones. This variety produces vigorous clumps and produces wonderful orange flowers. Reaches about 1m in height. Although hardy to possibly minus 10° or maybe even more, it is best to mulch well in the autumn. Feed and water well during the growing season.

A seemingly hardy evergreen Ginger lily. Height up to 2m with a spread of 1m. Needs a humus rich, moist but well drained soil in a warm sunny spot to do well. It also needs shelter from cold winds. Frost will kill off the top growth but as long as they are well mulched they can be left in the ground. Also makes a good container plant. Highly scented pale primrose flowers.

Hedychium greenii

A great plant for colour in the late summer. The glossy green leaves have a tremendous maroon colour on the reverse. The bright orange flowers are carried on foliage around 1.2m tall. Grow in moist but well drained soil. Although fairly hardy this Ginger will benefit from winter protection in cold gardens.

Spreading tree-fern with black stem and a rosette of fronds to 3m in length, on hairy black stalks. Height 10-15m with a spread of 3-6m. Water freely, especially in hot weather. This tree fern will need protection from frosts of more than a few degrees.
