SPECIALITIES
Our
speciality lies in the Southern Hemisphere plants, notably South
Africa, Australia, New Zealand and South America. As well as many
of the succulents from throughout the world. As many of these plants
are uncommon in Europe we have a difficult task advising on the
hardiness of many of these plants. We are guided in our choices
by the use of the USDA zone ratings and generally choose plants
that most people have a reasonably good chance of growing. Every
garden is different and so much depends on the soil type, the winter
rainfall and the actual size of the plant. The basic rule that we
adopt is that the drier the soil type and the larger the plant is
then the more frost it will stand. This leads to the basic golden
rule-add plenty of drainage material when planting. With the use
of our extensive range of reference books and our own experience
we have tried to provide as much help as possible. It is therefore
our strong belief that the hardiness guides we have given our accurate
but we must advise that you treat this as a guide only.
Amongst
our specialities are the many members of the Proteacae family including
the Banksias, Hakeas, Leucadendrons, Proteas and Telopeas. These
all need a very free draining poor soil type that is on the acidic
side. They must not be fed with any Phosphates as this can cause
damage to the the fine roots. Many of these can be grown in the
garden as long as the conditions are right. Alternatively they make
tremendous pot plants for the conservatory or patio in the summer.
Some, notably the Banksias will tolerate some wind and also make
good coastal plants.
