Particularly at home in coastal, windswept gardens, phormiums can tolerate cold conditions of -5°C to -10°C assuming basic winter precautions are taken, such as mulching around the base of the plant and in between shoot clumps. They grow well in a moist but well drained soil and positioned in full sun.
