Trees and Shrubs

 Senecio petasites
An evergreen shrub or perennial herb from Mexico with large broad ovate soft hairy leaves and clusters of yellow flowers in spring. Height and spread 1.5-2m. Plant in well drained soil in full sun. Makes an excellent foliage plant for the lush sub tropical garden. Hardy to around -4°C so protect from hard frosts.

 Sophora teraptera (Not currently in season)
A beautiful slender evergreen small tree from New Zealand with spring displays of bright golden yellow tubular flowers that hang in clusters over the entire tree. Makes an excellent large shrub or small tree with an airy graceful habit with its pinnate foliage. Height up to 4.5m with a spread of 3m. Grows well in moist well-drained soil in full sun. Makes a very good tub plant for a number of years. Caution toxic if eaten.

 Strelitzia reginae (Bird of paradise plant)
An exotic perennial with tall lustrous green leaves. From winter to spring produces orange or yellow flowers from green flushed orange spathes on tall stems. Height 2m. Spread 1m. Flower colour Orange, Yellow. Flowers from December to April. Evergreen. Foliage colour Green. Not hardy. Planting instructions Back-fill with soil mixed with peat and a suitable fertiliser.

 Syzygium paniculata Syn Eugenia paniculata (Brush Cherry)
This glossy leaved evergreen small spreading tree from Australia has a creamy pink – light brown bark and reddish bronze foliage when young turning to a shiny deep green. Small white flowers appear in the summer, which are followed by red – purple berries in the autumn. Height up to 8m with a spread of 2-3m but can be pruned to size. Hardy to about minus 5 degrees when mature. Plant in well drained fertile soil in full sun or partial shade with some protection from north and east winds.

 Tarchonanthus camphoratus (Camphor Bush) (Not currently in season)
This tough growing South African shrub gets its name from the aromatic leaves, which are leathery and grey green. Terminal sprays of small creamy flowers in late spring and summer are followed by tiny fruits, which are covered in what looks like cotton wool giving a very decorative effect. Able to grow to 5m tall and 3-5m wide but can be kept smaller by pruning. Withstands salt winds and gales making it very useful as a hedge or large shrub. Has withstood minus 6 degrees with us when planted in free draining soil in an open sunny position.

 Taxodium distichum (Swamp Cypress)
A conical conifer becoming columnar with age. Pale narrow green leaves turn rust-brown in autumn. Produces cones. Height 20-40m. Spread 6-9m. Deciduous. Foliage colour Green. Hardy. Planting instructions Back-fill with soil mixed with peat and a suitable fertiliser.

Semi-evergreen spreading shrub with grey-green foliage and blue flowers in summer. Height 1m. Spread 2m.Plant in any well-drained soil in sun.

 Thalia dealbata
This marginal pond plant has striking lush waxy leaves complement the exotic flower spikes. The unusual flower heads cluster in blue buds bursting in to violet blossoms. Flowering time is july to august. Height 120 to 150cm spread 90 to 120cm.

A tough plant with large golden leaves edged with a narrow band of green. Wind hardy and will grow in most ordinary garden soils. Water well for the first season. Height and spread in the region of 2m. Plant in full sun or light shade.

 Ulex gallica Mizzen Head (Dwarf Gorse)
A hardy evergreen groundcover shrub. Spine tipped green shoots and pea like bright yellow flowers from late summer to autumn, followed by dark brown seed pods. Grows well in exposed seaside gardens in poor sandy or stony acid soils. Height up to 1m with a spread of 1.5 m. Plant in well drained soil in full sun.

 Weinmannia racemosa (Kamahi)
Slow-growing evergreen tree from New Zealand with green foliage, which takes on reddish, tones in winter. Racemes of white flowers in early summer. Height to 10m but can be kept smaller by regular clipping. Spread to 5m. Plant in shade in moist soil.

 Xeronema callistemon (Poor Knights Lily)
An extremely rare plant from New Zealand that is actually a large tufted perennial with sword like leaves up to 1m in length ( 3ft ) resembling a Phormium or large Iris. In spring flower stalks up to 60cms ( 2ft ) emerge from the centre of the fan of leaves bearing gently curving brush like flowers up to 30cms long (1ft ) These flowers are coral red and tipped with bright orange. The ultimate container pot where it will flower earlier due to constriction of the roots. Grow in an a very well drained orchid type compost. Protect from hard frost and grow in an open sunny situation.

 Zantedeschia albomaculata
Semi-erect arrow shaped mid green leaves with translucent white spots. Flowers in the summer vary in colour from white, cream or pale yellow and sometimes pale pink, each with a purple mark inside the base. Grow in moist soil in full sun. Protect from hard frost with the use of a thick layer of mulch. Height 30-40cms. Harmful if eaten / skin and eye irritant.
