 Leptospermum scoparium Red damask
An evergreen shrub with long lasting double deep red flowers in May-June. Height 2-3m. Spread 1.5-2m. Needs some shelter from cold north and east winds in bad winters. Plant in a warm site in full sun in well-drained soil. (Add peat when planting). Danger zone is probably around minus 6 to 7 degrees C.

Hardy deciduous shrub with bamboo-like blue-green stems and white flowers in purple bracts all summer. Height and spread 2m. Plant in sun or part-shade in fertile well-drained soil.

 Libertia peregrinans (New Zealand Iris)
Stiff leaves like a miniature flax tapering to a sharp point. Arranged in fans and coloured orange brown. Will spread underground to form clumps but not aggressively. Small stems with white flowers are produced in the spring, these are followed by yellow seed capsules. Very hardy growing best in full sun in a loose soil. Height 30-60cms.

Evergreen shrub or small tree from New Zealand, with bronze-green crinkled foliage and new growth turning from red to brown in winter. Height 2.5m. Spread 2m. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist humus-rich soil. Plant against a warm wall in frost-prone areas. Hardy to about minus 6 degrees C.

 Lophomyrtus Wild Cherry
This plant from New Zealand is similar to Lophomyrtus x ralphii Katherine but has deep bronze leaves and a tighter habit. Will grow to around 2m in height. Plant in full sun in a well drained soil. Small fluffy flowers are followed by dark red berries.

 Lophomyrtus x ralphii Kathryn
An evergreen shrub from New Zealand with distinctive deep glossy red-purple colouring. Leaves turn reddish purple to coppery brown in the winter. Forms a bushy shrub to about 2m high with a spread of 1.5m. Makes an excellent plant for cut foliage. Hardy to about minus 7 degrees. Plant in light shade to full sun, in a well-drained soil that does not dry out too much in the summer. White flowers are produced in the summer.

Compact bushy shrub, with young shoots flushed rose pink, becoming mottled green, with creamy-yellow margins. Evergreen and frost-hardy. Protect from severe winds. Plant in sun or part-shade in fertile moist soil. Height to 2.5m. Hardy to about minus 6 degrees C.

 Lophomyrtus x ralphii Pixie (Not currently in stock)
A beautiful foliage shrub from New Zealand with small bronze green leaves with chocolate purple new foliage in spring and summer. Hardy to temperatures in the region of minus 6 degrees C. An excellent variety for rock gardens as it only grows 30cms tall with a spread of 40 – 50cms. Plant in well drained soil in full sun. Excellent for pots and containers. PLEASE NOTE THESE ARE SMALL PLANTS.

 Lophomyrtus x ralphii Red Dragon (Red Dragon)
A stunning evergreen foliage shrub from New Zealand. New shoots are brilliant reddish pink maturing to a textured blackish red when the weather gets colder in the winter. Height 1.5 –2m with a spread of 1.5m. Can be pruned to control the size. Mature plants produce open cup shaped flowers in the summer, followed by dark black red berries in the autumn. Grows best when planted in humus rich soil in partial shade.

A great foliage plant from South Africa. Evergreen tall erect shrub with blue-grey foliage and russet flower-spikes in summer. Height 2-3m. Grow in moist but well drained fertile soil. Will survive short periods at minus 5 degrees C. Loses leaves in hard weather but will normally regrow from the base.

A plant from New Zealand that grows upto 10m with dark green serrated leaves.Has small yellow flowers in spring and striking violet berries in late summer, autumn. Is a very wind hardy plant that grows well in a open position.

 Metrosideros excelsus Syn. Tomentosus (Pohutukawa) (Not currently in stock)
New Zealand ‘Christmas tree’. Erect freely branching tree. Oblong semi glossy leaves are white felted underneath. Small trumpet shaped flowers are covered in red stamens in early summer. Very good for salt laden winds. Grow in well-drained neutral to acid soil in full sun. Able to stand a few degrees of frost when established. Height 3 to 8m with a spread of 2 to 5m. One of the best flowering plants for the conservatory.

 Metrosideros umbellata Syn. M. Lucida
A slow growing but fairly hardy evergreen shrub to tree from New Zealand’s South Island. Brilliant blood red flowers in summer and tough leathery lance shaped leaves that withstand salt winds making it ideal for seaside gardens. Or makes a great conservatory plant if pruned back after flowering. Forms an erect multi branched plant 3m high by 2m wide. Will get bigger after many years. Plant in well drained soil in an open sunny position, this variety is one of the hardiest Metrosideros.

 Michelia figo (Banana shrub)
A beautiful evergreen shrub with 10cm long glossy leaves and large cup shaped banana scented flowers in spring and summer. These are yellowish green to white and up to 3cms across. Height 3-4m with a spread of 1.5-2.5m. Plant in moisture retentive but free draining neutral to acid soil in partial shade. Likes similar conditions to Camellias. Hardy to around minus 5°C.

 Michelia yunnanensis
A rare evergreen that forms a small open crowned tree up to 4-5m tall with a spread of 3-4m. Large creamy and yellow flowers are borne in the spring. Needs a sheltered site in a fertile soil - similar to a Magnolia - for best results. Good in large pots. Only hardy to minus 4°C so protect from hard frost.

 Musa basjoo (Japanese Banana) (Not currently in stock)
Hardy banana plant with large bright green leaf-blades and yellow/ cream flowers in summer followed by non-edible fruits in a hot summer. Height and spread 4m. Plant in a sheltered south-facing corner in sun or shade. Wrap trunk in severe winter weather. Plant in a humus rich soil and feed and water well during the growing season for really quick growth.

 Myosotidium hortensia (Chatham island forget me not)
A clump forming evergreen perennial from New Zealand with large glossy heart shaped leaves up to 30cms long. Dense clusters of open bell shaped blue flowers often with white margins are borne in the early summer. Height and spread 60cm. Needs a moist, humus rich but well drained soil in dappled shade and a sheltered site to do well. Feed with a seaweed based fertilizer and mulch well with seaweed or bark.

 Myrsine divaricata (The Weeping Matipo)
This large evergreen shrub or small tree from New Zealand has spreading branches and stiff drooping branchlets that are hairy when first formed. Small leathery leaves are complimented by tiny creamy brown flowers, which in turn are followed by purple berries in the autumn. A rare and most unusual shrub that can be pruned to size. Plant in well drained soil in full sun or partial shade.
