 Aeonium arboreum Schwarzkopf
A perennial succulent with several stems bearing rosettes of very dark purple foliage and gold yellow flowers on mature plants in the spring. Height 60cms with a spread in the region of 90cms. Plant in sun or light shade in a very well drained soil. Protect from frost.

 Agave americana
Evergreen succulent, with rosettes of blue-green fleshy leaves with a sharp tip to the end of each leaf. Height and spread 2m. Tall flower spikes are produced on mature specimens. Plant in a container, or in the ground, in very well drained soil (mix in grit if necessary) in a sunny site. Agaves are slow growing, and must be kept dry in winter. Withstands hard frosts when mature but protect from severe cold. Specimens available.

 Agave americana variegata
Evergreen succulent with sword-shaped broad green- yellow variegated foliage with a sharp point to the end of each leaf. Height 1.5m Spread up to 2m Mature plants produce tall flower spikes in summer. Plant in full sun in very well drained soil. Add grit for extra drainage. Excellent in a large container. Grows well in Southwest and other mild areas. Protect from hard frost. Specimens available.

 Agave celsii
A beautiful clump forming variety of Agave from the high altitude areas of Mexico with bright bluish green foliage up to 50 cm in diameter. Makes a stunning plant for ornamental tubs and pots using john Innes no.3 with plenty of extra grit for drainage. Hardy to about minus 4 degrees C. Protect from hard frost. Grow in full sun in very well drained soil.

 Agave chrysantha
A hardy succulent from Arizona with many inward facing spines and a nasty tip spine, borne on leaves that can reach 1m long and 10cms wide. These leaves are a grey to a deep green colour. As the plant ages a dramatic flower spike appears with umbels of bright golden yellow flowers. This spike can reach 4 –6m high. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil adding plenty of grit if necessary. Height 1 –2 m with a spread of 1.5 –2m.

 Agave ferox
Evergreen succulent, forms a stemless rosette of thorny fleshy green leaves. Height and spread to 1.5m (4ft) When mature produces greenish yellow flowers on tall erect, then spreading panicles. Plant in full sun in very well drained soil, add grit to soil. Will need protection from severe frost.

Hardy in well-drained gravel/grit- mixed soil, in full sun. Toothed fleshy red-tipped green-yellow leaves and flower spikes up to 2m on mature plants in summer. Avoid centre of plant becoming too wet.

 Agave palmeri
A hardy well armed variety from Arizona with pale green leaves covered with sharp spines and a long terminal spine on the end of each leaf. A 4-5m tall flower spike of greenish yellow flowers occurs after many years. Height and spread 1-1.5m. Plant in full sun in a very well drained soil or in a pot.

 Agave striata
A fairly hardy variety from Mexico. It forms a many leaved rosette with narrow almost pencil shaped, grey green, 1m long cylindrical leaves. The leaves themselves have no spines on the margins but the tip carries a vicious spine giving a hedgehog appearance. After many years a 2m purple flower spike appears. A good plant for the garden or pot as long as it has very well drained soil. Very drought tolerant.

 Agave Victoria Reginae
A beautiful variety known as the Queens Agave. Basal rosettes of incurved, triangular oblong, white marked, dark green leaves about 15-30cms. Long with thick rounded tips and a brown spine. Tall flower spikes of creamy white flowers 5cms wide appear in summer sometimes tinged purple. Height and spread 0.5m. Plant in very free draining soil in full sun, also very good for tubs.

 Aloe arborescens Red Flowering
Bushy aloe with a height of 2.5m and a spread 1.5 to 2m. Red flowers in late winter. Plant in full sun in a very well drained soil, add lots of grit when planting. In a free draining soil should be hardy down to about minus 4 degrees C. Makes a very good tub plant. Harmful if eaten.

 Aloe ecklonis
A very hardy Aloe from South Africa but must have very free draining soil, If necessary add grit when planting. Produces little or no stem and dull green leaves to 40cms. Long. These are spotted on the lower surface and have toothed margins. Flowers vary from red to yellow. Harmful if eaten.

South African succulent growing on a single stem with fleshy grey-green leaves and panicles of tubular orange-red flowers in summer. Height 2-3m. Spread 1.5m. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Protect from hard frost. Harmful if eaten.

 Aloe fosteri
This is one of the most beautiful varieties of spotted Aloes from South Africa. It can reach a height of 60cms with a spread of up to 1m. Brightly coloured flowers ranging in colour from yellow, orange, to scarlet, similar to candy sticks, appear in the autumn making this a very exotic looking plant. Plant in very well drained soil in full sun. Also a very useful container plant. Hardy to about minus 5 degrees but protect from severe frosts with fleece. Harmful if eaten.

 Aloe humilis (Dune Hedgehog Aloe)
This small stemless variety from South Africa divides to form densely tufted groups of several dozen plants. The leaves of the rosettes have white tubercles and soft white prickles with red to orange flowers 30cms tall in spring. Grow in very well drained soil adding plenty of grit, in full sun. Alternatively grow in pots and containers in gritty compost. In our experience hardy to minus 4 degrees C so far.

 Aloe maculata
A hardy, usually stemless Aloe from South Africa. It should be able to stand temperatures as low as minus 7 degrees for short periods as long as it is planted in a very free draining soil, if necessary add grit when planting. Leaves are spotted and have sharp marginal teeth. Flower colour can range from red, orange to yellow. Harmful if eaten.

 Aloe mutabilis
An outstanding high altitude South African Aloe. Good resistance to occasional frosts in the region of minus 5 degrees. Forms a clumping plant up to 1.5m wide with trailing stems up to 1m long. Yellow to red, red hot poker type flowers are produced on 1m tall stems in the late winter to early spring. Grow in a container for the conservatory or in the garden, in either case it must have very free draining soil. Harmful if eaten.

 Aloe pratensis
From South Africa this Aloe usually branches from the base to form groups up to six with grey-green leaves with brown soft pointed spines on the undersides and triangular spines on the leaf edges. Rose red flowers on 60cm long spikes compliment dense rosulate leaves in the spring. One of the better Aloes for a heavy soil and can take severe cold.

 Aloe reitzii
A South African Aloe that should stand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees easily. Normally growing as a single stemless rosette to about 1.3m high. The leaves are long and broad. Reddish brown teeth along the leaf margins. Tall flowering spikes in the summer are covered in dark red flowers, which age to yellow. Flowers are tubed shaped. Plant in full sun in a very free draining soil.

 Aloe striatula
Hardy succulent with orange yellow flowers in early summer and a bushy branching habit. Height and spread 1m. Full sun, must have very well drained soil, add grit when planting. Has survived minus 7 degrees C. on our nursery. Makes a wonderful tub plant. Harmful if eaten.
