Restios

 Baloskion tetraphyllum (Syn Restio tetraphyllus)
A beautiful Restio from Australia that forms a dense clump of smooth slender erect stems about 1m high. The habit resembles a miniature bamboo. Each node has a tightly wrapped light brown sheath and thin thread like bright green leaves emerge from each stem. Height and spread 1m. Plant in well drained but moisture retentive soil in full sun. Certainly hardy to -10°C but should prove a lot hardier. Used extensively in Australia as cut foliage.

 Calopsis paniculata
A tall growing South African Restio growing in the region of 1.5 – 2m tall with a spread between 1 –1.5m. It produces finely branched stems with grass like flowers in the autumn. A very useful variety for using as cut foliage. Grow in a well drained but moisture retentive soil that is on the acid side. Hardiness is unknown but has survived minus 7 on the nursery.

 Chondropetalum mucronatum
A wonderful structural Restio from South Africa forming an erect tussock of growth up to 2m high and 1m wide. Makes a fine accent plant for sunny beds and borders. In summer light brown bract like flowers occur on the end of each upright stem. Plant in an acid soil that drains well in the winter but holds some moisture in the summer. For fast growth water well in hot dry weather. True hardiness is unknown but has survived minus 5 on our nursery. ONLY 15 LITRE PLANTS AT PRESENT

 Chondropetalum tectorum (Thatching Reed)
Known as Dakriet in it’s native South Africa, this popular Restio forms a very attractive, fast growing, tufted clump of stunning foliage reaching about 1.5m in height and spread. Slender, compact spikes have brown bracts when flowering in the autumn. Used in South Africa for thatching hence the common name. Young plants look a little straggly but they soon straighten in to beautiful clumps of structural foliage. Grow in any well-drained soil in full sun, and can be planted near the coast. Danger zone minus 8 to minus 10 degrees C.

 Chondropetalum tectorum dwarf
Known as Dakriet in it's native South Africa, this popular Restio forms a very attractive, fast growing, tufted clump of stunning foliage reaching about 1m in height and spread. Slender, compact spikes have brown bracts when flowering in the autumn. Used in South Africa for thatching hence the common name.  Elegia capensis (Broom Reed)
A stunning fast growing architectural Restio from South Africa the stems reach about 2m in height with slender branches arranged in whorls at the nodes. Forms a tussock about 1.5m wide. Golden brown flower heads are produced in the spring followed by dark brown seed heads. Excellent for cut foliage. Looks great when planted next to a pond and seems to prefer moisture in the summer. Plant in full sun in well drained moisture retentive soil. Although top growth may be cut back in temperatures as low as minus 8 degrees as long as the plant is mulched well in, our experience, it should regrow from the base.

 Ischyrolepis subverticillata
A stunning architectural Restio from South Africa with 1.5m long dark green, arching, feathery fern like stems, which are widely used in the cut flower industry as, cut foliage. Small greenish yellow flowers turn into shiny speckled grey nutlets in the season. Grow in full sun or light shade in an acid soil that drains well in the winter, but does not dry out too much in the summer. Looks stunning when planted in large pots. Has proved hardy to minus 8 degrees C so far.

 Restio brunneus
An evergreen grass like plant from South Africa with erect 1.5m tall attractive stems with lovely globular brown seed heads in the summer with a spread in the region of 1m. Plant in acidic well drained soil in full sun. Keep well watered until established and don't feed with phosphates.
 
 Restio quadratus
A truly stunning South Africa Restio with outstanding square stems. A hardy plant that can reach about 2m high and makes a great specimen plant in most gardens. Very rare but we have managed to produce these from seed harvested on our own nursery. Grow in a moisture retentive but free drained soil. Water very freely for the first summer.

 Rhodocoma arida
A beautiful feature plant from the Restio family that forms a 2m high erect tussock of structural, reed like arching stems with decorative seed heads in the summer. Grows best in well-drained acid soil in full sun. Will withstand dry weather and has withstood minus 6 degrees on our nursery where the drainage is good. Also very attractive planted in a large colourful pot.

 Rhodocoma capensis
An extremely elegant Restio from South Africa with beautiful, 2m tall arching stems with fine foliage. A stunning exotic looking variety with a spread in the region of 1m. Plant in an acid soil that does not dry out too much in the summer but is not waterlogged in the winter. Add peat or bark. Do not feed unless the soil is very poor. Needs full sun or partial shade. Stunning in a container and has proved hardy to temperatures lower than minus 8 degrees at Pershore college. To achieve this it will need to be mulched well. Top growth may die back but will regrow from the base in the spring.

 Rhodocoma fruticosa
An attractive smaller variety of Restio that forms an erect tussock of very structural reed like foliage about 60cms wide and high with brown seed heads in the summer. Plant individually or in-groups in a well-drained soil in full sun. Add peat or bark when planting and use a slow release fertilizer. A very ornamental plant that is equally at home in pots or containers. Has survived minus 5 degrees in pots on our nursery.

 Rhodocoma gigantea
One of the most attractive of the large varieties of Restio with finely divided foliage when young maturing to long arching plumes up to 2 – 3m tall with feathery foliage. These stems look like a cross between a grass and a bamboo. Plant in well drained acid soil that does not dry out in the summer. A very handsome, exotic looking plant that has withstood temperatures as low as minus 7 degrees when mulched with bark or similar. Very highly recommended. Top growth can be burnt back by hard frosts but will regrow again in the spring.

 Thamnochortus bachmanii
From South Africa this very decorative Restio has 0.7m long arching foliage. In the summer it produces papery golden seed heads and with a spread of only 50cms it is well suited to container cultivation. Grow in well drained soil in full sun, adding peat or bark when planting and mulch well. Water well in dry spells until established when it will withstand drought and a fair amount of frost.

 Thamnochortus cinereus
From the mountains of South Africa this strikingly structural Restio will grow to about 1m high. The foliage is grey green and silvery with sterile side shoots and rich golden brown grass like flowers in the summer. Good as a specimen plant or planted in groups. Planted in a sunny situation in a free draining soil it has survived to at least minus 8 degrees at Pershore. Like many of the Restios it will act herbaceous and regrow in the spring. With its reed like stems it makes an excellent container plant.

 Thamnochortus lucens
A smaller variety of Restio with beautiful silvery bracts on stems about 60cms long with a spread of 30 – 60cms. A good feature plant for dry slopes. Needs good drainage and full sun weather planted in exotic borders or in pots. Feed with slow release fertilizer or liquid feed in the growing season. Mulch with bark to protect the roots. Has survived minus 5 degrees on our nursery but may prove hardier than that with time.

 Thamnochortus spicigerus
From South Africa this decorative Restio is often used as thatching material. Forms a very attractive tussock of reed like foliage up to 1.5m high and 1m wide. For best results plant in an acid soil that is well drained in a sunny position. Once established will withstand drought and moderate frosts. Looks great in large ornamental pots.
