Proteas

 Lomatia tinctoria
An erect evergreen shrub from Tasmania with attractive ovate to triangular pinnate leaves and 10cm long racemes of fragrant creamy white 1cm long flowers in summer. Height 1-2m with a spread of 1-1.5m. Plant in well drained acid soil adding bark and peat or similar to keep moist in the summer. Hardy to minus 7 degrees C.

 Protea cynaroides (King Protea)
Huge pink-crimson to cream flowers in the spring. An evergreen shrub with a height 1.5 to 2m. Plant in full sun in a very well drained acid soil. Do not use fertiliser. Can tolerate about minus 5 degrees C. One of the easiest Proteas to grow. If frosted should regrow from the base. Can be grown in a large tub and given protection in the winter.

 Protea fertiliser Soluble
A fast acting Protea feed that contains no phosphates. A great way to encourage new growth in the growing season. Can be applied every 7 -14 days and will produce great results when used in conjunction with our slow release fertiliser. Dissolve one level teaspoon in 4.55 litres (1 gallon) of water. Will make up to 500 litres (110 gallons) of feed. 24-0-16 + trace elements Can also be used to feed the Restios. Please note that if ordering this on its own there is a £2.50 carriage charge per pot and not the £17.00 charge as will show up on our online shop.

 Protea fertilizer. Slow release
Specially formulated for Trevena Cross Nurseries. This is a slow release fertilizer that contains no phosphates. Lasts for up to 12 months. Use at the rate of one tablespoon per 4 litres of compost. Use when repotting or as a topdressing. Allow about one handful per plant when planting out. Please note that if ordering this on its own with no plants there is a £2.50 post and packing charge per pot due to the weight - not the £17.00 as will show up in the online shop!

 Protea pink ice
This hybrid variety is a vigorous free flowering plant with rich pink-red flowers with a silvery appearance. Flowers are produced virtually all year round. Height up to 1.5m with a spread of up to 1-2m. Plant in an acid, well-drained soil in an open sunny position or grow in a large pot in low phosphate compost. Hardy to minus 5 degrees C when established.

 Protea repens (Not currently in season)
A native of South Africa that is tolerant of many conditions, including salt-winds. Bushy spreading shrub to 2m with sticky shuttlecock flowers which may vary from greeny white to deepest red, and variations in between! Attracts bees. Plant in sun in free-draining soil. Do not feed with phosphates. Should be hardy to about minus 5 degrees C.

 Protea subvestita
An upright shrub with silky leaves and creamy white or sometimes pink flowers. From the mountains of South Africa. It should be able to stand quite hard frosts perhaps even as low as minus 10 for short periods. Must be grown in poor free draining acidic soil. Do not feed with phosphates. Will make an excellent conservatory plant as long as ventilation is adequate

 Protea venusta (Mountain Protea)
Dense spreading hardy shrub with compact foliage and pink buds opening to show fluffy white centres in late summer. Height 1 to 1.5m. (3-4ft) Spread to 3m, (10ft) Plant in full sun in very well-drained soil (add grit) Do not feed with any phosphates. Young plants.

 Telopea burgundy (Not currently in season)
A vigorous erect growing shrub with prominent bright crimson flowers from late winter to early spring and large deep green leaves. This variety is a cross between Telopea speciosissima and Telopea oreades. Plant in most average well drained soils in full sun or grow in a large pot. Height 3-4m with a spread of up to 2m. Hardy to minus 8 degrees C when established.

 Telopea Red Embers
A fantastic evergreen shrub from Australia with large rich red flowers on long stout stems in spring. Prune hard after flowering. Plant in well drained soil in an open sunny position. Hardy to minus 7°C without damage. Feed with Protea feed that contains no phosphates. Reaching 2-3m in height.

 Telopea speciosissima (New South Wales Waratah)
Evergreen shrub from Australia. One of the best cut flowers of the Proteaceae family. A large vigorous shrub growing to about 3m. As soon as flowers begin to fade it needs to be pruned quite hard to prevent the plant becoming leggy. Deep green serrated leaves compliment large red domed flowers. Hardy to about minus 5 degrees C. Must be planted in a very well drained soil and given protection from the wind.
