Bamboos and Grasses

 Arundo donax versicolor
Bamboo-like grass with huge white striped green foliage and purple spikes in autumn. Height from 2-5m Grows best in moist conditions in full sun. Cut back hard each year in the spring. Dies back to ground level and should be able to take temperatures as low as minus 8 degrees as long as it is mulched very well to keep the frost away from the roots.

 Chionochloa flavicans (Not currently in season)
A beautiful and distinctive grass that when in flower resembles a miniature pampas grass. This New Zealand variety forms a clump to 1m tall of weeping green leaves with arching flower stems up to 1.5m long that carry drooping silky pale green plumes which turn creamier as they mature in the summer. Grows well in most conditions in sun or light shade and in tubs and pots.

 Cortaderia richardii
Densely tufted, clump-forming perennial grass with long narrow, leathery, green leaves, and tall stems of dense, silvery or yellowish white plumes. Max Height 3m. Max Spread 2m. Flowers August to September. Full sun. Hardy. Water thoroughly before planting.

 Fargesia murielae Bimbo (Umbrella Bamboo) (Not currently in season)
A hardy small bamboo with thin leaves reaching a height in the region of 1.5m. Ideal for container cultivation or for planting where space is limited. Makes a great plant for the Japanese garden. Plant in full sun or part shade in a well drained soil with plenty of compost added. Water well in dry weather until established.

 Fargesia nitida (Fountain Bamboo) (Not currently in season)
A slow growing hardy bamboo from Central China that forms a dense clump of erect dark purple-green canes that are lined with purple-brown colouring. Height up to 5m with a spread of 1.5m. Grow in fertile, moisture retentive soil and prefers partial shade.

 Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'
A clump-forming perennial with narrow, curving, almost black leaves. Clusters of pale purplish white flowers followed by dark blue-black fruit. Max Height 20cm. Max Spread 30cm. Flowers July to August. Fruits August. Full sun/partial shade. Frost hardy. Water thoroughly before planting.

 Phyllostachys aurea (Golden bamboo)
A fast growing hardy bamboo that is reliable and non invasive. Produces yellow canes in full sun. In a shady situation these canes will be green. Grows to 6-8m with very straight culms. This is the best bamboo for hedging but is also good as a specimen plant. Makes a good tub plant but will need regular feeding.

A fast growing hardy bamboo that is reliable and non invasive. Produces yellow canes in full sun. In a shady situation these canes will be green. Grows to 6-8m with very straight culms.  Phyllostachys bambusoides Lacrima dea (Japanese Timber Bamboo)
A hardy clump forming bamboo with unusual black / brown markings on the deep green culms. Leave sheaths are thick and have kinked bristles. The leaves are long, lance shaped and glossy green. Height in the region of 3-8m. Although a clumping variety in time this bamboo can spread. Grow in fertile soil in full sun to partial shade in a moist but well drained soil.

A hardy evergreen bamboo with small leaves and young green culms fading to a dull yellow or even bright orange up to 5m tall or bigger in warm sites. This is one of the largest hardy bamboos available. Needs a warm sheltered site in full sun or light shade with rich, fertile, moisture retentive soil. Hardy to minus 18 degrees C.

This is one of the most cold hardy timber bamboos. Shoots can be eaten and is very fast growing. Large leaves can give it a tropical look. Can grow very tall perhaps in excess of 15m. The green canes have yellow grooves at the internodes.

A fast growing hardy bamboo with large dark green leaves and long straight culms. Height in the region of 5-6m and spreads fast to form a large clump of wind resistant growth. One of the more compact Semiarundinarias reaching around 5m. Prefers to be planted in a moisture retentive soil in full sun. Feed well and keep well watered until established. The culms are green turning reddish brown with age.
