The shift to autumn begins

Posted on by Trevena Cross

The weather has cooled and the last few days have been somewhat damp for a lot of the country. After such a lovely summer it can’t help but make us think that a transition is in progress and that we should be looking ahead to autumn and…dare we say it… {whispers} winter.¬†Yes that’s right, time seems to be up on the ‘proper’ summer of 2014, and even though lovely weather isn’t unheard of through September, if we treat any warm, sunny days as a bonus then we won’t be disappointed. ūüôā

What is there to look forward to this autumn?

  • Bulbs for autumn planting and spring colour are already filling shop shelves, with the ever popular daffodil, tulip, crocus, and hyacinth bulb joined by many others to give you maximum choice for 2015 spring blooms.
  • The first trickle of autumn / winter bedding packs are in and starting to fill trolleys at the front of the garden centre, including popular pansy and viola packs. There will be plenty more of these as the season progresses…
  • Autumn offers the best time of the year to plant for the avid gardener, as trees, shrubs, bulbs and bedding have a chance to establish their roots in the warm, moist soil, well in advance of their spring planted equivalents next year. During late autumn and winter bare root plants also provide great value opportunities for the garden.
  • Birds and other wildlife start to rely on the ‘human hand’ for help as weather conditions change through autumn and winter. Getting involved in such care can be very rewarding for the ‘human hand’ as well as those it helps!
  • Start the Christmas shopping early! Our extensive¬†gift and homeware department is popular all year round but really comes into its own in the run up to Christmas and over the Christmas period. Avoid a last minute panic and enjoy a leisurely shop over the next few months… promise we won’t disappoint!

So yes, summer may be leaving us, but we all have PLENTY to look forward to this autumn!

Praise Indeed

Posted on by Trevena Cross

In an increasingly competitive retailer world where it sometimes feels as though you can’t get out of the starting blocks without a giant budget, a loud voice and a high profile, we still continue to strive for what we’ve always strived for as an independent family-run Cornish nursery: being able to offer a diverse range of high quality plants along with local, friendly, knowledgeable customer service.

Most of the time we’re pretty confident we’re doing a good job but there’s nothing like reassurance from a loyal customer, and we’re extremely grateful to Giles and Debbie for taking the time to share the below with us, which includes a range of pictures from their garden first, followed by a lovely testimonial which we have to admit, had us blushing just a little…

Decking in the garden

“Well that’s a few pics of my garden. I’ve used Trevena Cross for over 10 years, and have a real love for this garden centre, or as I see it, a proper nursery! My wife and I are full time landscape-gardeners and have been in business for 20 years. (Garden Design).

I can truly say, it’s been the best place for plants hands down. They always have what we need and more! We’re always impressed with the prices and variety of a broad range of plants with the more unusual, “hardy- exotic” too.

My pictures show many of the plants we’ve bought for our new garden in Trevone Bay Padstow. We moved in a year ago today, and since then we’ve slowly added a collection of unusual and interesting plants, most of them, from Trevena Cross Nursery. I wanted to show my appreciation for a fantastic place and would recommend them to anyone who wants to start a new garden or just simply wants to add something unusual to their garden… Keep up the good work!

¬†See you soon Giles and Debbie Wilson”

We’re not big ‘boasters’ by nature, but we hope that if even a proportion of our customers can come away feeling the way Giles and Debbie do about us, then we’re on the right tracks…

Exciting new shop introduction

NEW Handmade Sculptures from Zimbabwe

Here at Trevena Cross we have created a unique display of beautiful, hand crafted, Fair Trade sculptures inside the shop entrance – you can’t miss it as you walk in…

Tilner Art Sculptures at Trevena Cross  Little Wooden Giraffe Sculptures

Where the sculptures come from…
Tilnar Art. Tilnar Art’s wood, tin and stone carvings are purchased direct from artists in Zimbabwe. They source their products through a small family run supplier in Harare who have been working with and supporting these talented artists for over 10 years. Purchasing one their sculptures helps provide stable employment and basic needs for many dependants, in a time when unemployment and inflation in Zimbabwe are at unimaginable levels. All products are Fair Trade with the artists either working for themselves or working in co-operatives. Tilnar Art does not support the regime of Robert Mugabe. To the contrary, the items are purchased direct from the artists, thereby supporting the indigenous tribes of Zimbabwe. Tilnar Art appreciates that¬†it is now more important than ever to keep supporting these artists, as their ability to support their families depends on purchases.

Here at Trevena Cross we have a unique display of hand carved and hand painted wooden sculptures, most notably giraffes, as well as a selection of beautiful recycled metal animal sculptures.

The wooden sculptures are made by artists scattered throughout Zimbabwe and mainly in remote rural areas. As much care as is taken in the carving and finishing of a product is also taken in the selection, maintenance and delivery of these fabulous one-of-a-kind sculptures.

Wooden Giraffe

The metal sculptures are hand made by a group of artisans from Zimbabwe who have an international reputation for producing the highest quality metal sculptures available from Africa. All of these sculptures are marked with the artists’ logo and come with a colour product tag with information about the artists.

Recycled Metal Bird Sculpture

The reclaimed metal is heated and is individually crafted to produce these fabulous sculptures that are then finished with a varnish. As each sculpture is individually made, each will be unique with its own markings and poses. They can be displayed indoors or outdoors – just imagine the impact of one in your garden! If it is placed outside, a yearly coat of boat varnish is recommended to maintain the sculpture’s excellent condition.

We’re very excited about these truly unique, one-of-a-kind additions to the shop and invite you to stop and admire them on your next visit! See if you can resist taking one home with you!
