Royal Cornwall is fast approaching…May 29, 2013
The torrential weather last year tried hard to put a dampener on 2012 proceedings, (to no avail we might add!), and so this year we sincerely hope that the weather is kind to traders and visitors of the show.
The weather has already presented a challenge to this year’s Royal Cornwall Show (or at least our part in it!) with a number of our larger structural plants kept aside for the display not currently where they should be for the time of year. The cold, wet conditions that subsided only a month ago have left certain plants with a lot of catching up to do – some of which just won’t be able to in time. This of course makes the display design and construction all the more crucial, but won’t stop us working our hardest to put something show-stopping together! With a gold medal to uphold from last year, we don’t have a choice!
Taking place next week from the 6th-8th June at the showground in Wadebridge, the annual event welcomes visitors from across Cornwall – and Devon and beyond. Be sure to come and visit us in the Flower Tent – a friendly face, expert advice, wonderful plants and an unmissable competition all await you! 🙂
Showpiece No 3: Bedding & Patio PlantsMay 17, 2013
At this time of year, its all about wonderful bedding, patio and basket colour at the garden centre, and in the garden. While these annuals provide only ‘fleeting colour’ in comparison with more permanent planting; whilst here, they are certainly worthy ‘showpiece’ title holders, displaying showy blooms and splashes of unbeatable colour in the garden, on the patio, and in baskets.
From Surfinias, Petunias, and Lobelia to Ivy Leaf Geraniums and a wide range of other patio favourites; these plants’ ability to create drifts of colour, or memorable displays in pots or baskets is unmatched by anything else in the plant world!
Popularity for bedding sadly appears to have declined in recent years – with watering requirements and an overall reliance on us to survive and thrive in a world where we’re all evermore stretched for time, perhaps a reason, as well as the more unpredictable spring and summer seasons leaving the long term survival of bedding and the like in doubt, with frosts, severe gales, and water-logging becoming all the more likely during these traditionally warmer, sunny seasons!
However, there is most definitely still a place for the bedding or patio plant – and we’re still keen to sing their praises here by making them our showpiece no. 3!
Don’t forget to pop along to the garden centre to be tempted by a HUGE range of bedding and patio plants this spring and summer! – There’s some great offers to be had!
Trevena Cross taps into young talentMay 14, 2013
Trevena Cross Nurseries recruited the services of fresh young talent from Falmouth University for its latest business venture.
Producing a new promotional video that showcases the business seemed an ideal fit with local budding film/media students; and with the assistance of Falmouth University’s placement co-ordinators, the idea was straightforward to follow through with.
The level of interest in the opportunity, and the obvious talent of so many film students who shared their portfolios, was a revelation, and refreshing to see.
The valuable contribution that students can clearly make to business is really inspiring, and it’s exciting to think that this talent and enthusiasm is the future for Cornish business, with the right support for local recruitment and new Cornish business start-ups following graduation.
The team that ended up taking on the Trevena Cross promotional video (second and third year students) had indeed already started up their own production company – with unquestionable commitment to film, and professionalism on par with well established, more experienced businesses.
We’d certainly advise others to be open-minded regarding the capability of our business stars of the future. We’ll certainly be in touch with Falmouth University again should we require an injection of fresh young talent in another area of our business – assuming that it’s a mutually beneficial arrangement.
The video, produced by Pin Up Productions for Trevena Cross Nurseries, can be found on YouTube here, and will soon be live on the website!
